With the announcement of CentOS Stream by the CentOS Project, many organizations are evaluating their CentOS fleet and planning to move beyond CentOS. The use of unpaid open source is at an inflection point. While CentOS Linux 7 reinforced that open source software provides the right tooling for modern IT organizations, the EOL of CentOS 7 is causing organizations to reconsider their paid vs unpaid open source stance.
This paper seeks to present the advantages and disadvantages of the most serious contenders for replatforming CentOS Linux 7 workloads. The paper explores advantages and disadvantages of the paid and unpaid open source linux alternatives and includes commentary on cloud native distributions.
The authors drafted this paper to express opinions and to provide a venue for thoughts on the impact on organization from the CentOS Project shifting focus to CentOS Stream.
